JNP COFFEE

JNP Coffee is an exporter and importer, with roots in the country of Burundi and a vision not only for delivering exceptional coffees from East Africa to the market and roasters like Deeper Roots, but to play an active role in social transformation in coffee-producing communities. JNP Coffee's founder, Jeanine Niyonzima-Aroian, relentlessly pursues her dream of seeing her birthplace, Burundi, recognized for the wealth of its natural resources and incredible coffees.

JNP Coffee’s mission is to transform lives in Burundi by shifting social norms through the production of exceptional coffees for the global market, sharing premium prices with coffee farmers, and giving women the tools to be self-sufficient through ownership rights and access to
education.

One way to effectively improve both the soil quality and cup quality, dramatically promoting sustainability, is to create and use biochar. Biochar is a natural soil enhancer made by heating agricultural byproducts, like coffee husks and pruning waste, in a low-oxygen environment. When added to coffee fields, biochar helps plants absorb nutrients more efficiently, leading to healthier trees, higher yields, and improved resilience against drought.

JNP Coffee is launching a pilot project with local coffee farmers to produce biochar using byproducts like the dried outer layer of coffee cherries and corn husks - both of which have shown excellent results in soil regeneration. The Community Give Back funds will support the purchase of a small kiln to convert agricultural waste into useful biochar. Farmers will receive training on how to make and apply biochar, and they will track its impact on soil health, yield,
and long-term sustainability.

Together, we can take a tangible step toward more regenerative coffee farming - where every cup supports healthier land, stronger communities, and a more sustainable future for coffee in Burundi
